How To Sell A Crane

If you have a Used crane you want to sell there are a number of ways to go about it. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Selling A Crane on your Own locally

Selling a crane on your own can be done in the same way as selling a car. You can put a For Sale sign on the crane. You put an ad up in the local paper or on a website like Craigslist, find an interested buyer arrange the transfer of title or a bill of sale and complete the sale on your own. On the plus side you won't be paying anyone for assistance but it means you need to do all the work on your own. Transfer of a crane has a lot more complexity than a car sale and usually with a lot more money at stake. A couple things to note with local sales.

  • Advertising the crane locally limits the pool of potential buyers. With less demand you many not be able to get the price you desire.
  • Often, selling a crane locally means that you might end up selling your Crane to your competition which may not be desirable.
  • You will need to deal with everyone interested in your crane. Because most newspaper and Craneslist ads don't provide much detail  you will spend a fair amount of time answering questions or showing the crane to everyone interested.
  • A lack of familiarity with procedures, paperwork and everything that needs to happen to ensure a successful transaction may cause problems at the time of sale.
  • There are a number of scams that take advantage of private parties selling high ticket items like cranes.

Selling A Crane on your Own Nationwide

There are trade publications that will let you run nationwide ads. This will expand the pool of potential buyers but will increase the amount of time you need to spend explaining the details of the crane. With local buyers you can always have them come by and take a look. That won't work however, for buyers that need to travel. Buyers want to know whether or not a crane justifies the travel time and expense. The nationwide ads charge by the inch so those details are typically not in your ad which means you will need to discuss a lot more to get a potential buyer to inspect the crane.

Selling your Crane through traditional Crane Brokers

There are many Crane Brokers that work the same way as Real Estate agents. You sign a listing agreement and the broker goes to work to find a buyer for your crane. They take a percentage of the sale price or a fixed fee to sell your crane. But traditional brokers can lock you in for a fixed amount of time. If they don't quickly find you a buyer there isn't much you can do to pursue other options until the listing expires. Some brokers will make every effort to market and advertise your crane but this isn't always the case. Before listing with a broker you should find out

  • How will they be marketing your crane?
  • Can you Sell the crane on your own while listed?
  • Will they be paying for advertising?
  • Are there any fees to you?
  • Will your crane be marketed through a website?
  • Do you need to sign a contract?

Selling through Auction Houses or Crane Buying agents

If you need to sell your crane immediately selling through an Auction House or selling directly to Used Crane Yard is an option. With the auction house you run the risk of getting far less than your crane is worth if there is little interest. And in the same way that a used care dealer will give you a wholesale value for the car you can absolutely expect to get less than what your crane is worth

On occasion we will buy cranes directly. Again if you have the time to let us find you a buyer you will likely get more for your crane. But if time is critical please contact us and let us know the situation. We, or others we work with might be willing to make a purchase.
